Freedom Airshows pilot Matt “Happy” Quy has over 12 years of experience in the airshow industry as a performer, static display, and military airshow coordinator. As a performer Happy flies a demo in the P-51C “Red Tail,” a dynamic low altitude B-25 Mitchell performance as well as in the Stearman. As a Static Display he toured the country for 3 years flying the Spirit of Tuskegee. This Stearman biplane is an original Tuskegee Aircraft that averaged 9 shows a year from California to Oshkosh. This aircraft that Matt rebuilt and promoted as the Spirit of Tuskegee is now on permanent exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. As a Military Airshow Coordinator Happy saw the other side of the industry. Happy contracted and coordinated entire warbird ramps at the award winning Defenders of Liberty airshow at Barksdale AFB. Happy worked complex airspace and safety issues resulting in the first airshow demonstration of the MQ-9 Reaper UAS at Aviation Nation at Nellis AFB.
Happy has over 12,000 hours flying experience in over 60 types of aircraft. As a former B-52 pilot and instructor in the T-6 Texan II Happy taught the next generation of Air Force instructor pilots. Now he is teaching the next generation of warbird pilots instructing and evaluating in the P-51, B-25, and T-6.
Off the airshow circuit Happy has delivered major public speaking events at the Tuskegee Airmen National Convention, Southwest Airlines, United Technologies, and more.
Happy’s experience includes Civil AIr Patrol Instructor/Search and Rescue Pilot, Regional Airline Pilot, National Airline Pilot, Major Airline Pilot, Alaska Bush Pilot, Bomber pilot and Undergraduate Pilot Training Instructor.
